SHSAA schools host York City badminton classic

The York City badminton tournament was held recently. It was co-hosted by the Yorkton Regional High School (YRHS) and Sacred Heart High School (SHHS). The coaches for SHHS are Jim Grela and Jeanne Fetsch and Shawn Redmond for the YRHS.

In boys singles placing first in their pools were Darren Tillman (YRHS) and Casey Maydonick (Canora) receiving a bye. Facing off in the quarter finals were Caleb Friedrick (YRHS) and Derrick Schwartz (Kamsack) and Colin Shewchuk (SHHS) and Chris Secundiak (Sturgis).

Both teams from the YRHS faced off in the semi- finals (Darren Tillman and Caleb Friedrick) and Sturgis (Chris Secundiak) took on Canora (Madonick). Advancing to the final match was YRHS and Sturgis.

Tillman defeated Secundiak to take the gold medal.

In girls' singles placing first in their pools and getting a bye were Brittany Brenzen (YRHS) and Kelsey Schultz (Melville).

Facing off in quarter-finals was Pelly (Robina Wapash) and SHHS (Rita Fetsch) and SHHS (Morgan Shymanski) and YRHS (Jodi Inglish).

Rita defeated Robina and Jodi defeated Morgan.

This had YRHS (Brenzen) squaring off against the SHHS (Fetsch) and YRHS (Inglish) playing Melville (Kelsey).

Advancing to the finals were Brenzen vs the MCS; Brenzen finished the job and won the gold medal (YRHS) and Kelsey (MCS).

Brittany took the gold and Kelsey won the silver.

In mixed doubles, placing first in their pools were the mixed doubles teams of Emily Kruger/Preston Liebrecht and Justin Guy/Riana Skikewich.

Both teams had a bye into the playoffs.

Facing off in the first round were Pelly vs Taylor Irwin and Cassandra Sullivan from Melville while the YRHS team of Bo Carasson and Breanna Melanchenko took on Sturgis.

Sturgis played the Saints' Guy/Skikewich while Kruger/Liebrecht played against the MCS.

In the finals, it was Liebrecht/Kruger taking on Sturgis, in which SHHS went on to win, says Grela. Sturgis took silver medals, he said.

In boys doubles, finishing first in their pools were SHHS's Dylan Johnson and Anthony Fetsch. They received a bye. So did Kamsack, says Grela.

Pelly's team (Bernard McDonald and Jordan Chernoff) took on Sturgis.

YRHS (Eddie Schramm and Graham Campbell) took on Melville (Colton McLellan and Jayden Gerhardt). Sturgis defeated Pelly to face Kamsack.

Melville defeated YRHS to face SHHS. Sturgis and Sacred Heart both advanced to the finals.

Johnson/Fetsch (SHHS) took the gold with Sturgis winning the silver in three games, adds Grela.

In girls doubles placing first in their pools and getting a bye were YRHS (Emma Lockhart and Tato Crisanto) and Melville (Kelsi Rieger and Janelle Rieger).

In the quarter finals, Pelly (Jessica Aborahamson and Sophia Alfelor) took on SHHS (Brianna Ostafie and Eilish Stranaghan).

In the other quarter finals match, YRHS (Andrea Huang and Brandi Nielbrandt) took on the SHHS team of (Katie Inglis and Allison Kruger). Ostafie/Stranaghan (SHHS) won taking on Lockhart/Crisanto (YRHS) in one semi-final and Katie and Kruger (SHHS) won taking on MCS (Kelsi and Janelle) in the other semi-final.

Advancing to the finals were SHHS (Ostafie/Stranaghan) and they played the MCS. MCS took the gold with SHHS winning silver, closed Grela.
