The Yorkton Cross Country Ski Club is thrilled with the recent snow fall and head trail groomer Ken Gedak is all geared up to blaze a new trail along the rolling hills and tree lines of Yorkton Municipal Deer Park Golf Course.

Gedak and other club members volunteer their time to set the three loops that total approximately seven kilometres of groomed trails. Two loops are set both skate and classic style, which are a little more challenging than the first loop which is more for the beginner skier. Gedak hopes to have the trails groomed and set by Dec. 10, which will then be opened to the public to enjoy.

The Cross Country Ski Club held its annual general meeting last Tuesday night with Anne Stupak returning as president, Bob Purton as vice president, Deb Bloomaert as secretary and Wes Laube as treasurer. The club discussed the new member registration forms that are available online. The club strives to keep the sport affordable for skiers and held the membership fees to $30.00 per person or $75.00 per family.

The Yorkton club will also have its rental shop open Sundays from 1-4 p.m. Anyone can come and get fitted, and either rent skis for the afternoon or rent the equipment for a week. The club has equipment ranging from youth to adult sizes, in both skate and classic style. The new equipment is waxed and ready to hit the trails.

Most people want to try the sport first in order to see if they like it and this is a service that the club provides to give them the opportunity to do just that on good equipment waxed for the conditions.

The Yorkton Cross Country Ski Club also provides ski lessons to those looking to learn the basics of both skate and classic styles. The club is hosting a Learn to Skate class from Dec. 12-17 with Warren Popick as instructor. The skate classes will be held in the evening from 7-8:30 p.m. and equipment can be rented from the club if needed. Skate skiing requires more technical movements than the standard classic ski style, but both are a great sport for the full body workout the skiers want.
