The Good Spirit School Division hosted the fourth annual division-wide Standards Track Meet last week at the Flexihall.

About 1,300 students from 27 schools, students from Gr. 4-8 took part in various indoor track and field events including the 50-metre run, 600-metre run, high jump, long jump, shot put and relays.

"This is an excellent event for the students of the Good Spirit School Division," states Jason Trost, chairman of the event.

"Obviously the event promotes physical activity for our youth, but more importantly it teaches children about sportsmanship, integrity, confidence and social skills."

Trost goes on to say that it's their hope to pique the students' interest in exercise and get them involved in sports.

The GSSD hopes that this interest will carry over as they make their way to the high school grades.

From the Standards meet, the top 18 finishers in each event will be invited to attend the Showcase meet.

New for this year, explains Trost, is the addition of Gr. 7-8 students to the competition.

"Gr. 7-8 students have been invited to take part in shot put, 50-metre hurdles, triple jump, 600-metre run and a special quadathalon event which is a point total of all four events."

He goes on to explain why such a large event is being made even larger.

"Our organizing committee saw the benefits the indoor Standards Meet had with our Gr. 4-6 students.

We wanted to find a way to continue the track momentum into high school. Adding the Gr. 7-8 students seemed the next natural step and hopefully this will bolster track programming at the high school level around the division."

Next up is the GSSD Showcase meet Saturday, May 5, also at the Flexi-Hall.
