Thirteen-year-old Spencer Steele of Yorkton found out last month that he was invited to be a member of the U14 Provincial soccer team.

Playing soccer for seven years has been paying off for the member of the Yorkton United FC, as did playing recreationally in Canora previously.

"Lots and lots of practice," he responded when asked what it took to get invited to try out, and then actually make the team.

He is the only local currently on the roster.

He will be heading to Regina in the summer time to take part in practices with the provincial team.

He says he is looking forward to the new role/position he will learn by playing on this team. He was recruited to play centre defence.

Last year he went to the same tryout and was told he was a year young to make the team so this year he went in with a little more experience from playing in Yorkton and that worked to his advantage.

He said he received some encouragement from some of the coaches in the YUFC, including Mike Jakubiec, Chad Grodzinski and Andy Wyatt.

Steele's provincial team is being put together to compete in a tournament in late July in Winnipeg. They will be playing for one week.

Steele said his greatest strength on the pitch is his ability to "always seem calm with the ball".
