On Saturday afternoon, May 5, Yorkton Kidsport hosted their 1st Annual Stix on Broadway Street Hockey Tournament to raise funds to assist children of families facing financial obstacles, participate in local sports programs.
Amber Zaharia, urban youth sports co-ordinator for the City of Yorkton, said she was thrilled with the community support through sponsorships, as well as the high number of teams that registered to take part in the event.
Games were held in the Dreambuilders parking lot.
"We are really proud of the community for supporting this event, especially the local businesses that have stepped up and contributed funds for KidSport. We are so proud of our community for supporting KidSport. The 1st Annual STIX on Broadway Street Hockey Tournament raised just over $19,000."
There were a total of 14 teams entered, and there were winners on the 'A', 'B' and the 'C' side, says Zaharia. The champions were the Barley Burners. The Superstore Presidents came in second. The 'B' side champs were the Phantoms. There was also an ward for the team that raised the most pledges. That award went to the 64th Battery Black Sheep who raised over $2,000, she said. The award for Best Dressed Team went to Cap'n Crunch and the Cereal Killers.
Yorkton KidSport truly appreciates all of the support that came from local businesses, teams and players, and community members.
"This event would not have taken place without the support of sponsors, community participation, and volunteers who were on board as soon as this event was announced. The funds raised from this event go directly towards funding the registration costs of kids to play sports in Yorkton," she explained.
Last year Yorkton KidSport funded $30,000 to help kids participate in community sport programs. The committee is already excited for next year's street hockey tournament and is encouraging teams to start their off season training now! she said.
Registration for the games was $300 per team. Each team was guaranteed two games.
