Wandy and the YRHS archery team hosted their annual shoot Saturday at their gym. Over 230 participants took part, including numerous elementary school kids.

There were 235 participants in the annual Yorkton Regional High School Archery Shoot held over the weekend.

Among the schools participating were Columbia School, Dr. Brass, MC Knoll. Out of town schools included Churchbridge, Saltcoats, Canora, Sturgis, Esterhazy and Langenburg.

The Regional and Canora High were the high school participants in the shoot.

Darren Wandy, who has been at this for five years, and is coaching the Regional's team for the final year now, said it was one of those tournaments in which schools can send as many students to take part as they want.

"You can bring as many kids as you want," he said, even though numbers were "down a bit" this year.

Following the school year, Wandy will be packing his bags heading for Melville where he will attempt to get archery going at the Melville Comprehensive School. On Saturday at his final shoot at the Regional, archers took part in three scoring rounds of five arrows each.

Usually Wandy would hold this shoot as a practice for the Saskatchewan Provincials, however, this year it comes afterwards.

The national event will be done electronically and each school will decide which scores to send in.

"I am not sure what scores will be sent in for nationals," he says. "Each school will send their own in," he said via e-mail.

MC Knoll School had a strong turnout, says coach Leann Jarvis.

"Yes, (we are) sending scores in for nationals," she said Monday afternoon via Facebook message. She added that her team did well and some of the highlights includes the Elementary and Junior High categories.

"We won the Elementary and Junior High team divisions and also captured the Elementary Boys (Brad Heskin) and girls (Cailin Jarvis) title. Junior High boys (Brayden Jarvis) and girls (Hunter Frankfurt).

Following the shoot on Saturday, Wandy expressed thanks to all the help, school staff and Mike Jarvis who was the main official.

After the fifth year of the event, it's time to move to Melville. "Somebody will take it over," he insists. "I'd hate to see it not continue."
