Just about everyone involved in the GSSD put in an awful lot of time last week.

Some might even call it overtime.

Usually a game can go into overtime.

It happened one week ago this day when St. Paul's and MC Knoll went into extra time to determine a winner in boys' basketball action.

However some of the teachers that helped out to make sure the game could go on, their hours went into overtime too.

"We were done at about 9:30 p.m.," laughed Mark Schendel.

It really did go "quite late" into the night, he said following the completion of the YESSA basketball games.

Participating were: Columbia School, MC Knoll, Yorkdale Central Public School, St. Paul's, Ecole St. Michael's, and St. Alphonsus.

There were enough for eight teams in each category, he added.

It was a very long week for students of the Good Spirit School (GSSD) Division last week.

For parts of three days of the week, four different basketball courts were busy housing games during the YESSA city-wide basketball championships.

A fourth day last week saw some of those same students competing in track and field events during the GSSD Standards Track and Field events which also ran for three days at the Gallagher Centre Flexihall.

Three days of basketball and three days of track and field.

"This shows the great commitment of all of our coaches," says Mark Schendel, head of the Yorkton Elementary Schools Sports Association.

"It's a great showcase of talent (here)," he claims, for both the GSSD and the Christ the Teacher Catholic School Division.

Schendel spent most of his time in the gymnasium watching countless basketball games.

Games were held at MC Knoll, Ecole St. Michael's, Yorkdale Central Public School, and Columbia School.

By the finale on Wednesday, all 16 teams converged on Ecole St. Michael's floor.

"It was about 16 teamsthe energy was electric."

Making their way to the finals on the girls' side, MC Knoll took on Yorkdale Central, says Schendel.

"The girls' defence was airtight," observed Schendel.

On the boys' side, Yorkdale's team also won.

Over 250 kids were involved in the games (ages 11-14 years old).

"A big thank you to all the coaches for their tireless efforts," Schendel continues.

"We're not just developing players, but officials too," he added, whom he also thanked.

"From my own perspective, I know they all put in a lot of time and energy," he said of coaches and officials.

"Congratulations to Grant Edgar/Jason Boyda for putting together two successful programs."
