DINSMORE - Dinsmore Composite School (DCS) recently received a grant to help it work towards environmental sustainability.

The grant comes from the N:OW for Net-Zero project by FES. FES, a youth-led and youth-serving sustainable development organization, is accredited by the United Nations and holds a special consultative status with both the Economic and Social Council(ECOSOC) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Click here for more information about N:OWfor Net-Zero.

The grant enabled DCS to acquire a ZipGrow hydroponic growing system, marking a significant step towards sustainable agriculture and education. Over the past few weeks, the high school students have diligently worked to build the structure and nurture the seedlings. Their hard work paid off as they successfully transplanted their first round of lettuce, kale, basil, dill, and tomatoes.

The school community eagerly anticipates the arrival of more fresh produce, including spinach, peppermint, oregano, parsley, and other herbs in the coming weeks. This initiative promises to provide fresh produce and herbs for the school's breakfast program, canteen, and Food Studies classes. Moreover, once the hydroponic towers are fully established, the school hopes to share some of its locally grown produce with the wider community.

Congratulations to DCS students and staff for their dedication to sustainability. This achievement not only enhances the school's educational programs, but also contributes to a healthier and more sustainable future for all.
