OUTLOOK - The mayor of Outlook has reached a decision regarding her future in local politics.
Maureen Weiterman, who made history in the fall of 2020 by being the first woman to be officially elected Mayor in the riverside community, hadn't made her intentions known before last week as to whether or not she'd be running for a second term this coming fall in the municipal election.
Sharing a statement at the July 17 town council meeting, Weiterman revealed her decision, which was reached after she consulted with family and trusted ones.
Her statement, an emotional one read by Weiterman with tears, reads as follows:
"Municipal elections run on a four-year cycle, with the next election dates being held later this year. Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association is providing information sessions for people considering putting their names forward for Mayor or Council. I formally believe in the democratic system, and encourage people to seriously consider whether or not they're willing to serve their municipality in a position on Council. I have been privileged to be the mayor of Outlook for the past four years. I have worked with Council and an administrator who have done their very best to see that we move forward to grow our community. We have been supported by Team Outlook, who have strived to do their best for the community that they love.
Being the mayor has been one of the most important things I've ever done, and to say it didn't come with challenges would not be true, but the support that I've received from the people of our town and the surrounding community has been overwhelming, and I'm very thankful for all the words of encouragement.
After careful consideration and consultation with my family and trusted mentors, I am formally announcing tonight that I will not be seeking re-election in the fall. I am proud of the accomplishments of this council and the administration, and I'm very grateful for the community that I live in. I heart Outlook."
At press time, it is unknown who in the community will put their names forward in the mayoral race following Weiterman's decision not to seek re-election.
