Dave Baron, one of the event organizers said he looked at all the young curlers participating, and saw it as a big positive for the sport.
“There is a perception out there that curling is dying,” he told Yorkton This Week via email, adding “I admit the sport has had some challenges recently.”
However Baron sees better times ahead for the sport too.
“I firmly believe that curling is on the rebound. I offer the following as proof:
“Stenen, with a population of 100 and a two-sheet facility, recently hosted their annual bonspiel. Registrations maxed out at 24 and there was a waiting list.
“Sturgis, Preeceville, Arran bonspiels are yet to come. It sounds like the rosters will be full too.
“Recently I hosted a Grade 9 and under bonspiel. 28 teams entered. Two years ago, we had 16 teams.
“Last week at Junior Districts, we had 21 entries. Last year we had 16.”
And of course there was the well-attended Senior Districts which had 14 teams entered. The year before there were 12.”
