YORKTON – Local general contractors, KDM Constructors, have been nominated for a Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce ABEX award.
Based out of Esterhazy and Yorkton with a corporate office located in Esterhazy, KDM Constructors has been in operation since 2017 and is nominated for the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Award.
"We are excited. We're happy about it. We're looking forward to the awards gala," told Tracy Buffalo, KDM's Indigenous Relations Co-ordinator, in an interview with SaskToday.ca
Buffalo said KDM Constructors stands for Kawacatoose, Day Star, and Muskowekwan First Nations.
"It's a four-way partnership between the three nations and SECON Group of Companies and so we do a lot of community engagement through those communities," said Buffalo.
"In 2016, the Chiefs and Council of Kawacatoose, Day Star, and Muskowekwan First Nations, and the management team of the SECON Group of Companies, recognized a significant gap in Indigenous engagement in the industrial sector. The Chiefs and Council had a vision to provide employment opportunities to Indigenous people and create economic sustainability for their communities," read a paragraph in the about section of KDM's website.
Buffalo said KDM is mainly focused in Saskatchewan with sub-contracted site services at the BHP Jansen mine site as well underground sanitation services at some of Nutrien's facilities, noting the company's outreach in the inclusion and diversity for their work force is what earned them the nomination.
"We do a lot of hiring within the Indigenous community and with women in trades so we have a lot of equal opportunity in our work force," said Buffalo.
The ABEX Awards celebrate the success of Saskatchewan businesses and are scheduled for September 21 at TCU Place in Saskatoon.
