MELVILLE - Melville city workers have voted overwhelmingly in favour of job action, with 93 per cent of members in support.

Over 90 per cent of eligible members voted.

Currently, the city employs 32 permanent staff who are members of CUPE 456, and bargaining with the city has been ongoing since March of last year, after the last collective agreement between the two sides expired at the end of 2023.

However, on December 23, the City declared an impasse.

Wages are at the centre of the dispute, and in a release, CUPE local president Kevin Schick noted the first mediation session solved nothing, saying the city walked away from the table, having offered a worse deal than the previous agreement.

The union is not currently in a strike position at this time, but job action could potentially result in a full withdrawal of services.

Another bargaining session between the two sides is set for Feb. 26.
