YORKTON – National Flag Day of Canada was marked with an event held at the Gallagher Centre Feb. 15.

Members of the public, Yorkton City Council, Yorkton Chamber of Commerce and Yorkton Tribal Council gathered to commemorate the occasion.

Yorkton Mayor Aaron Kienle emphasized the importance of raising awareness about National Flag Day.

"I think it's a bit of an advocacy piece because so many people are unaware of flag day. Unaware that it's only been 60 years that this has been our national flag. I think part of it was advocacy," said Kienle of the event, in an interview with SaskToday.ca

Kienle also highlighted the unity that the national flag symbolizes, particularly in times when it is needed the most.

"We're seeing a time where unity is so valuable and so important and that's what we wanted to do here today with our residents and our community," said Kienle.

Addressing the looming tariffs, Kienle encouraged a focus on local support.

"Control what each of us can control. Things like shopping local, supporting neighbouring business owners and Canadian companies. I think that's something we should be doing now more than ever," added Kienle.

The event also featured remarks from Juanita Polegi, Executive Director of the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce, who reinforced the importance of supporting local communities.

"Shop Canadian and shop local. Support the communities—your local home communities. When we do things like honouring the flag like we do today I think that's a great way to help," said Polegi, adding, "when you have pride in your community you have pride in your nation. Today is a day just to focus on the positives—about being part of Canada and celebrating all the wonderful opportunities that we have in Canada as Canadians."

A letter to citizens, signed by Mayor Aaron Kienle, Yorkton Tribal Council Tribal Chief Isabel O'Soup, Juanita Polegi, Randy Trost, Reeve for the RM of Orkney, and Barry Novak, Reeve for RM of Wallace, encapsulated the spirit of the day.

"The flag is more than just fabric and colour, it represents the ideals of inclusivity, democracy, and freedom that define Canada. It flies high as a testament to our resilience, our diversity, and our unwavering commitment to progress."
