YORKTON - The new Parkland Regional Library location in Yorkton will be exempted from municipal property taxes.

Lani Best, Chairperson and Juanita Brown, member of the Parkland Regional Library Board, had attended the June 17 Council meeting “to request that their property be exempt from taxation,” Raelyn Knudson – Assessment & Taxation Manager with the city reminded Yorkton Council at its regular meeting Monday.

The request came after the Parkland Regional Library purchased 362 Sixth Ave N in April 2024.

“This is to be the new location of the library headquarters, previously located in the R.M. of Orkney,” said Knudson.

In the presentation to Council in June it was cited under the Cities Act that the following are exempt from taxation: the property of every public library established pursuant to The Public Libraries Act, 1996, to the extent of the actual occupation of the property for the purposes of the institution.

“Administration agrees that this scenario clearly applies to the property now occupied by the Parkland Regional Library,” said Knudson.

The current tax status of this property is commercial warehouse.

In order to change this property from taxable to exempt the city can add it to the supplementary maintenance list, said Knudson.
