Scouts camp suffers estimated $20K worth of vandalism damage

Vandalism likely sets the camp's schedule back several weeks.

GOOD SPIRIT LAKE – The Scouts camp located at Good Spirit Lake was recently the target of vandalism.

"I showed up this morning (May 23) for the inspection of the camp to find 13 windows broken, four doors broken down and about $20,000 worth of damage," told Kent Latimer, Local Group Commissioner for Yorkton Scouts, in an interview with SASKTODAY.ca

"There isn't a cabin out here that was not damaged or touched by these vandals," added Latimer.

Latimer said that the vandalism will likely set the camp's schedule back several weeks as he's already had to cancel the use of the grounds for the upcoming weekend.

"As a volunteer I can see us not being able to open for a month-and-a-half and we're going into busy season," said Latimer, adding, "you just can't have windows made in two days and you can't have doors delivered in two days. We've got a group coming out tomorrow (May 24) that we're going to have to cancel because it's not safe due to all the broken glass."

To report information related to this or other crimes call 310-RCMP for immediate response, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or visit their website.

In the meantime, Latimer said a GoFundMe has been set up to recoup some of the costs of the damage.

"It's extremely disheartening with all the effort that the community and the entire area has put into this camp over the 50 years ... to come and find that some vandals can destroy it in a matter of hours."
