The Meeple Guild: PnP Summer #14: Stack those flapjacks

This is a game that is an easy teach, and ideal for family, or friends, for a different card game, one that is simple, fun, and allows for some easy chitchat as a side during the game.

YORKTON - The idea was to end PnP summer with the passing of August, but then I came upon the 2024 54-Card Game Design Contest on Board Game Geek where I found the card game Flapjack Stacks by designers Jeff Wallace and Rylie Wallace.

As the contest is for games with up to 54 cards, this was super simple to print, cut, sleeve and get to the table.

This is a game that is at its heart a ‘shedding game’. You want to be the first to empty your hand – for three or four players that is six cards. There are rules for two, but this one needs 3 / 4 to shine brightest.

You get cards out of your hand by playing them to one of four stacks (see the flapjack theme there), so there is a ladder aspect here. If you can’t play you must draw a card.

Stacks are going up numerically if ‘making them’ and down if ‘eating them’ and that status does change through game play which is fun aspect of FS.

Players each start with a ‘syrup’ card which is sort of a wild, allowing you to play a card out of sequence once per game.

This is a work-in-progress with the contest ongoing, but in our games we found no hiccups – well besides an initial misread rule, so while it might see some tweaks I’d bet they are minor.

Well worth searching on BGG – no individual entry yet – for a download.
