YORKTON - With an eight game winning streak on the line the Yorkton Terriers leaders in the SJHL Viterra Division hosted second place Weyburn Sunday.
The Terriers started the scoring account in the rare afternoon start at the Westland Insurance Arena as Tylan Henrikson scored the only goal of the first period. The goal came on the powerplay at 4:30.
In the middle frame the Wings responded as Josh Sale scored the lone goal of the stanza to knot things 1-1.
At 6:05 of the third the Wings edged ahead on a Lucas Schmid goal.
Thomas Ries tied things for the home side at 8:56 – a powerplay effort.
It was an extra man effort by Jerome Maharaj at 14:40 which again gave the visitors a one goal lead, this one at 3-2.
And that would be it as the Yorkton winning streak came to an end, and the Wings closed the gap on the front-running Terriers in the Viterra.
Angelo Zol was in net for Weyburn facing 31-shots for the win.
Callum Creig guarded the twine for the Terriers facing 32-shots in the loss.
Even with the loss the Terriers remain atop the Viterra with 43 points, with Weyburn now only a point back with 40. Melville sits third with 33 points and Estevan fourth with 26.
The two teams will meet again Wednesday, with a game set for Weyburn’s barn.
The Terriers head north to play Melfort Saturday, Jan. 11.
