Mayor Kienle announced this week a city undertaking to fill the bucket of a city-owned front-end loader with food.

YORKTON - While perhaps being a little young to pull off being Father Christmas Yorkton Mayor Aaron Kienle is trying to foster some happy tidings not only locally but provincially as well.

Kienle announced this week a city undertaking to fill the bucket of a city-owned front-end loader with food.

And, then Kienle turned to social media to issue a challenge to other Saskatchewan city and town mayors to get involved with their own locally-focused food drives.

“We were just looking for good ideas – ways to help out this holiday season,” he explained to Yorkton This Week.

Kienle said city administration pointed out they had been accepting donations of food initially at City Hall and then at other city facilities, and he saw an opportunity to grow the idea by making “it something fun and engaging.”

Locally, people can donate food at city facilities so when paying the water bill, or taking in programming at the Gallagher Centre, said Kienle.

The idea is gaining momentum with good social media post sharing, which Kienle said he hopes will translate into the bucket being filled.

As for where the food will go, Kienle said, “we haven’t decided,” but added “there are a number of good options” in Yorkton.

As for the his challenge to other mayors, Kienle said Wednesday afternoon he has not heard back on his challenge, but added if not this year, he hopes the idea will gain traction as something bigger than the effort in Yorkton.
