YORKTON - The Salvation Army's Christmas Kettle Campaign kicked off with festive cheer at the Parkland Mall the morning of Nov. 15.
"It means that now the Salvation Army will be out fundraising for the year for toys and Christmas hampers and food for our food bank," said Major Laurie Reilly of the Salvation Army
This year, the Salvation Army aims to raise $125,000 through the Christmas Kettle Campaign. Kettles have been set up at the mall, Save On Foods, Walmart and Superstore, providing ample opportunity for the community to contribute.
While the campaign is off to a promising start, Major Reilly noted the need for additional volunteers. "We're slowly getting there. I was a little delayed in calling people," she Reilly, adding, "we do have lots of empty spots still and we could really use some more volunteers."

Despite the challenges, Reilly, a newcomer to Yorkton, expressed gratitude for the warm reception from the community.
"Yorkton is so generous so far. We've only been here since June and we feel part of the community," said Reilly.
Donations to the Christmas Kettle Campaign can be made in several ways, including cash, cheque, debit, or credit. Contributions over $20 come with a receipt.
The tradition of the Christmas Kettle Campaign dates back to 1891 when Captain Joseph McFee of the Salvation Army placed a crab pot at the Oakland Ferry landing in San Francisco. McFee's call to "keep the pot boiling" drew donations from passengers, and the idea spread worldwide.
Today, the kettle remains a symbol of the Salvation Army's efforts to raise funds for their work throughout the year, with kettles located in over 2,000 locations across Canada.
