YORKTON – The Yorkton Regional High School (YRHS) is set to stage the musical "The Wedding Singer," an adaptation of the popular 1998 Adam Sandler movie.
Directed and choreographed by Kaely Neibrandt, the production has been edited to resonate with high school audiences, ensuring appropriateness while retaining its comedic charm.
“The satire is all still there,” said Neibrandt in an interview with SaskToday.ca.
“It's extremely hilarious and just as much of a comedy as the movie was," said Neibrandt.
Set in 1985, the musical follows a wannabe rock star working as a wedding singer who, after a dramatic and unhealthy heartbreak, decides to give up on love. His life takes a turn when he meets a girl who is already married.
Neibrandt told SaskToday.ca that the cast features 40 students from Grades 9 through 12, supported by 30 members in the crew and band with the live band a mix of professional adult musicians and students.
“This is the biggest cast I've had since I started directing in 2014,” said Neibrandt.
Neibrandt said that since September, students and staff have dedicated around 170 hours outside of school to bring this production to life.
“We started in September and between September and the final show date, all of our students and staff involved will have put around 170 hours outside of school into the production," said Neibrandt.
The musical will be performed on November 22 at 7:00 PM and on November 23 at 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM at the Anne Portnuff Theatre. Tickets are priced at $20.00 and can be purchased online through EventBrite.com or at the YRHS's main office.
“It’s an extremely fun show and we have some extremely talented students that you don't want to miss — nobody should miss this," said Neibrandt, adding the production team includes Katia Georgeson as the Music Director and Band Orchestrator and Chad McDowell as the Set Designer.
