REGINA – After a five-week adjournment to find a lawyer, the man suspected of killing Misha Pavelick in 2006 is still trying to secure counsel.
This morning in Regina Provincial Court, the accused requested a date in October to allow securing representation.
“I cant adjourn for two months just waiting for you to get a lawyer,” said Judge D.J. Kovatch in Youth Court, further explaining to the accused how once a lawyer is found, the matter will be adjourned to allow them time to become familiar with the matter.
The 34-year-old accused - whose name is protected as the alleged offence occurred when he was 17 - replied that he was attempting to arrange finances to hire a lawyer.
“That’s why I was asking for two months, instead of wasting your time,” he said, also requesting disclosure.
Judge Kovatch informed the man of standard procedure where the lawyer receives disclosure after taking on a matter.
The man faces a single charge of second-degree murder, having been arrested back on June 24, but released after his initial court appearance two days later. The arrest was a major break in the Pavelick cold case, an investigation by police that has been active since Pavelick’s death 17 years prior.
Ultimately, Judge Kovatch set a date of Sept. 14 for the next appearance in Regina Provincial Court.
