Alleged drunk driver throws metal pipe at Regina police

Suspect said to hit guardrail on Ring Road, assault witness.

REGINA – A high speed chase on Ring Road included one Regina man allegedly swinging a metal pipe, which he threw at a police vehicle.

At around noon on July 6, RPS received a report of a drunk driver in the 2600 block of 28th Avenue. They found the suspect vehicle in Harbour Landing, and pulled the driver over.

"During the traffic stop, the driver ignored police commands and fled from officers at a high rate of speed," said RPS in a media release.

Not long after, multiple calls to police were received regarding the same vehicle - which was later discovered to be stolen - driving erratically and at high speeds on Ring Road.

"The vehicle had been travelling northbound and collided with a guardrail near the Assiniboine Avenue exit," RPS said. "The male driver exited the vehicle, walked out into traffic and threw objects at multiple vehicles."

One passerby stopped to help the man, but was rewarded by being assaulted by the suspect. When police arrived on scene, the suspect was "in the ditch swinging a metal pipe, which he threw at an officer who was inside a patrol vehicle." He further resisted arrest while taken into custody, assaulting one of the RPS members.

Eliya Hamad, 26, was eventually arrested and charged with two counts each operating a conveyance dangerous to the public, and resisting arrest; plus single counts impaired operation of a vehicle, failure to stop after and accident, assault, assault a peace officer, and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

He made an initial appearance in Regina Provincial Court on July 7.
