Convenience store robber faces extended jail time

Regina man has been in custody since February.

REGINA – A 35-year-old Regina man will be serving more time behind bars for an armed robbery that happened in 2020.

Joshua Chad Nahnepowisk, 35, appeared in Regina Provincial Court on April 17 via video, having been in custody since Feb. 24. The Court heard that the robbery he pleaded guilty to happened on Oct. 3, 2020 when Nahnepowisk entered a convenience store on the 500 block of Broad Street with a hand gun, demanding cash. Staff at the business obliged, and Nahnepowisk fled the scene on foot.

Police used a canine track, and through investigation, determined he left in a dark minivan parked on the south end of the alley. Two days later, they found a van matching the same description with Nahnepowisk in the passenger seat. A subsequent search of the vehicle produced the clothing that matched what he was wearing the night of the robbery and a pellet gun.

Since the robbery, he also accumulated a breach of curfew charge, and provided a false name to police while they were investigating a possible break and enter on Feb. 24.

Nahnepowisk’s lawyer noted he does feel remorse over what happened, that the man of few words “feels ugly about what he did.” She also said her client has significantly reduced his drug and alcohol use, and has been gainfully employed in the past with no issues finding work.

“This is an excellent opportunity to look at yourself and your future and say, ‘can I do better, can I live a different life’,” said Judge Murray Hinds while addressing Nahnepowisk. “I urge you to conclude that you can.”

Agreeing with a joint submission proposed by the Crown and defence lawyers, Judge Hinds sentenced Nahnepowisk to 18 months in custody and a 12-month probation order upon release. With credit for pre-trial custody, Nahnepowisk will serve 460 days in jail.
