Man accused of killing Saskatoon couple to stand trial

Kira Opoonechaw and Phoenix Checkosis were stabbed to death in Saskatoon a year ago.

SASKATOON – A 21-year-old man is getting closer to standing trial for the murder of Saskatoon couple Kira Opoonechaw, 19, and Phoenix Checkosis, 21.

Case management in Saskatoon Court of King's Bench for Sebastian Sanderson on two counts of second-degree murder is scheduled for April. Case Management is held before a trial date is set. Issues discussed at case management include a list of proposed voir dire, witnesses, and pre-trial applications.

Sanderson was arrested Jan. 19, 2022, after Saskatoon police found Opoonechaw and Checkosis with stab wounds in the 400 block of Ave. B North. They were taken to hospital. Opoonechaw, who is from Melfort, died that day and Checkosis, from Poundmaker Cree Nation, died the following day.

Police say that Sanderson was known to Opoonechaw and Checkosis.
