REGINA — Running into traffic and trying to enter vehicles is not a good idea.
But those actions were what ultimately landed James Chevrier, 41, in police custody on Wednesday morning.
Police responded to a call of a man trying to get into homes and vehicles in the 1300 block of Edward Street just before 11 a.m. on May 31.
"While en route, officers learned that the male was on Lewvan Drive near Seventh Avenue," said RPS in a media release. "Information provided to police stated that the suspect male had approached a vehicle, told the driver he had a weapon, and attempted to gain entry to the vehicle."
While the vehicle drove away, another person in the area left their vehicle to provide assistance, and according to police, the suspect entered the driver's seat of the second vehicle, assaulting the driver.
The suspect was discovered by police further along Lewvan Drive, now near Fourth Avenue.
"Police observed the male stopping vehicles in traffic and pulling on the door handles," RPS said. "Police provided verbal commands to the suspect male but he was uncooperative."
More officers came on scene, and during the arrest, pepper spray was deployed on the man. After being taken into custody, he was transported to hospital by EMS.
Chevrier was charged with two counts of robbery, and failure to comply with a condition of a release order (keep the peace and be of good behaviour). He appeared in Regina Provincial Court this morning, with the Crown opposed to his release. He was placed under a no-contact order with the people he allegedly robbed.
Chevrier was remanded into custody until his next court appearance on June 6.
