REGINA – Gone are the days where you can leave things unlocked in rural Saskatchewan. Police have noticed a trend in thefts in the south central region of the province, prompting a reminder for people to lock up.
“Since mid-November, RCMP detachments in south-central Saskatchewan have noted a steady increase in reports of property crime, including break-and-enters and thefts,” said RCMP in a media release. “A number of items have been reported as stolen in these incidents, including vehicles, firearms, tools and electronics.”
While stolen property is an annoying inconvenience at the very least, encountering a thief can be downright dangerous.
“Investigation has determined these crimes may be committed by suspects armed with weapons,” RCMP said.
A combined effort between Lumsden, Moose Jaw, Milestone, Southey, and White Butte RCMP plus the RPS Auto Theft Unit is investigating if reported thefts are connected.
“Remember to report crimes, even if they seem small,” RCMP noted, adding that it helps with their investigations. “When all crimes are reported, officers get a clearer picture of the types and numbers of crimes occurring in their area.”
Some tips police recommend include making sure all windows and doors in buildings are locked while away; installing an alarm system and/or video surveillance; having outdoor lighting; and locking vehicles and equipment when not in use. With vehicles, it’s also a good idea not to leave valuables, tools, or keys in them while unattended, and to park in a garage or well-lit area when not in use.
