REGINA – It pays to call in with crime tips, quite literally as Regina Crime Stoppers notes in a report released this week.
“Regina Crime Stoppers experienced a slight decrease in tips received last year, but the total value of property, drugs and cash seized or recovered is nothing short of impressive,” said RPS in a media release.
In 2022, the program received 715 tips (888 in 2021), which led to 24 arrests (52 in 2021) and 35 cases cleared (108 in 2021). There were also 44 charges laid over the past year, down from 2021 which noted 154 charges.
“In comparison to the 2021 statistics, last year saw fewer tips, arrests and cases cleared, but the result of these tips and concluded cases saw almost four times the total amount – $686,400 – of property, drugs and cash recovered, compared to the previous year,” RPS said.
A total of 31 rewards were approved last year, amounting in $8,275 going to tipsters for their assistance.
“Of note, only 11 of the 31 rewards have been claimed to date, leaving more than half of the approved rewards unclaimed,” RPS explained.
Launched in 1984, RCS has recovered almost $12.2 million in stolen property, drugs, and cash; making over 2,300 arrests; clearing more than 4,100 cases; and laying just over 1,900 charges as a result of 25,405 tips.
RCS is more than just a place to leave information about crime in Regina, the program also has initiatives for community outreach.
“In addition to its tips reporting service, board volunteers plan and deliver outreach programming, which is aimed at students and new Canadians, as well as the general public,” RPS said. “Fundraising activities include the highly-successful Annual Crime Stoppers Golf Tournament.”
