Semi collides with fallen axle near Whitewood

No injuries, fire crews on scene for two hours.

WHITEWOOD – Fire crews were kept busy east of Whitewood last night after a semi collided with an axle on Highway 1.

The Whitewood Fire Department was called to the scene at 9:20 p.m. on May 14 in the westbound lane of the busy highway,

"Firefighters arrived on scene to find a semi had collided with an axle that had fallen off a semi travelling in front of it," the Whitewood Fire Department said. "The semi collided with the axle and drove over it, causing damage to the front of the semi cab as well as puncturing holes in a number of fuel tanks and breaking off several air lines, leaving the semi inoperable."

The driver of the semi was not injured, and the semi that lost the axle did not remain on scene.

Fire crews contained diesel spills, inspected the rig for damage and assisted with traffic control of the scene, and were back in service just before 11 p.m.
