SIRT investigating after man shot, killed by police in Saskatoon

That more than one officer discharged a firearm in response to a confrontation is indicated in a release from SPS, but the release does not state how many.

SASKATOON — The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) is investigating following a fatal officer-involved shooting this morning.

At approximately 10:40 a.m. this morning, June 20, officers responded to the area of Avenue V South and 20th Street West for a report of an armed person. When officers arrived, they located the suspect in the 200 block of Avenue S South.

A release issued by Saskatoon Police Service says that following a confrontation with police, officers discharged their service-issued firearms. The 27-year-old male suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene by paramedics.

Within the criteria outlined in The Police Act, 1990, the Saskatoon Police Service notified SIRT of the incident. Following the notification, SIRT’s Civilian Executive Director accepted responsibility for the investigation.
