Standoff at Muskowekwan FN

MUSKOWEKWAN FIRST NATION – What could have ended very badly resulted in a standoff with no shots fired.

Punnichy RCMP were called to the Muskowekwan First Nation yesterday at 5:40 p.m. for a report of a break, enter, and assault at a home. While the victim had sustained minor injuries as a result of the attack, the woman had left the home and was at a safe location.

"Punnichy RCMP responded immediately, and upon arrival, observed the male suspect damaging windows from inside the residence," said RCMP in a media release. "Officers attempted to gain entry, but the doors were barricaded. The male began to throw several items at the responding officers from inside the residence and was observed to be pointing what appeared to be a possible firearm toward the officers."

Responding police members found themselves in a situation where they needed to take cover, but also contain the scene to maintain public safety. Additional resources were called in from the Wynyard Detachment, Melfort Traffic Services, and the Police Dog Services.

"Officers used verbal de-escalation skills to instruct the male to exit the residence, but he responded by uttering threats to shoot," RCMP said. "After a short period of verbal negotiations, the male exited the residence and was arrested without further incident."

A search of the residence ensured nobody else was in the home, and no injuries resulted from this incident.

Police arrested Anthony Charles Lowe, 40, of Muskowekwan First Nation, and he has been charged with assault, mischief under $5,000, break, enter and commit an offence, plus two counts assault on a police officer.

His first court appearance was this morning in Regina Provincial Court, and his matter was been moved to this afternoon. 

Ultimately, Lowe's next court appearance was set for July 11 in Punnichy for him to seek legal counsel.
