WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service responded to 93 calls for service during the period of Oct. 2-8, resulting in a total of 53 charges. Of the charges, 31 were laid under the Criminal Code of Canada, 16 under the Traffic Safety Act (TSA), and the remaining six under the City of Weyburn bylaws or other Acts or Regulations. Of the 31 criminal charges, only two were in relation to individuals who either failed to attend court as required, or failed to comply with a condition of their release.
In the very early hours of Friday morning, an officer on patrol conducted a traffic stop on an individual who was known to be prohibited from driving. The traffic stop resulted in much more as the individual was found to be in possession of drugs, stolen property, and an illegal firearm. The individual was also breaching a probation order. As a result of the traffic stop, the adult male driver now faces 11 new charges and was remanded in custody to appear in court.
On Tuesday afternoon, officers were called to an intoxicated person who was apparently passed out in a local restaurant. The individual was very uncooperative and assaultive toward the officers who attempted to deal with him. The adult male was ultimately taken into custody and charged with resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.
Further to this incident, officers were notified by hotel staff where the individual had rented a room, and were advised that the male had damaged the room. Officers attended the hotel in response to the reported damage and, as a result of further investigation, the male was additionally charged with property damage, possessing a controlled substance, and trafficking a controlled substance.
The Weyburn Police Service held a high-visibility Checkstop on Friday evening, stopping about 200 vehicles and issuing three tickets as a result.
On Sunday evening, another traffic stop resulted in an individual being charged with driving while prohibited as well as impaired driving. The adult male was charged accordingly and released with an upcoming court date.
The Weyburn Police also responded to a variety of other calls including alarms, domestic disturbances, suspicious persons or vehicles, mental health concerns, requests to check on an individual’s well-being, harassing communications, and calls relating to animals, parking, or other bylaw concerns.
