Youth unresponsive after taken into custody

Police arrested the boy for stealing a car and evading police, later transferred to hospital after suspected overdose.

SASKATOON – A teenager arrested for stealing a car and giving chase was taken to hospital after becoming unresponsive while in custody.

Around 1 a.m. on Jan. 5, police tried stopping a vehicle in a parking lot at 22nd Street W. And Avenue W N.

“The vehicle had been reported stolen earlier in the day,” said SPS in a media release. “The vehicle fled westbound on 22nd Street, and pursuit was called off momentarily.”

The stolen car was later discovered stuck in snow and abandoned in an alley of the 100 block of Tache Crescent.

“A 17 year-old boy and 15 year-old girl were taken into custody without further incident a short distance from the vehicle,” SPS said. “A search of the vehicle recovered a baton, axe, and brass knuckle-type weapon.”

Police learned the boy had consumed some sort of intoxicant prior to his arrest, and soon reacted to that drug - making for a very serious situation.

“Shortly after being taken into custody, he became unresponsive and life saving measures - including the use of Naloxone - were administered,” said SPS. “Medavie Health Services were called to assess him and he was transferred to hospital in stable condition.”

The youth faces charges of dangerous driving, evading police, obstruction, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, three counts possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes, and breach of conditions.
