REGINA - The riding of Regina University, first created in 2016, has seen both the New Democrats and the Saskatchewan Party win the constituency. The two parties, along with the Progressive Conservative Party of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Green Party, are vying for the upcoming legislature seat.
In 2020, the NDP and MLA incumbent Aleana Young won the Regina University constituency. In this upcoming election, Young is running for Regina South Albert, a new election district for the 2024 election.
NDP candidate Sally Housser is running in the Regina University constituency. Housser has previous government work experience, serving as the Deputy Director of Communications for the Manitoba government.
Housser has also worked as a consultant for numerous sectors and is a public affairs professor. In her free time, she volunteers for the Regina YCMA and serves on its board.
While the NDP looks to repeat itself in the Regina University constituency, the Sask Party is looking to reclaim the riding they won in 2016 with long-time member Gene Makowsky.
Makowsky has been with the Sask Party since 2011 and has served as the minister for various roles since joining the legislature. Most recently, Makowsky served as the Minister of Social Services.
Before serving time in politics, Makowsky played football in the Canadian Football League, playing 17 years for the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He also taught in the Regina Public School system.
In the three ridings Makwosky has run in (Regina Dewdney and 2x Regina Gardiner Park), he’s received about 60 per cent of the votes each time, making him the front-runner for Regina University.
As for the PCs, their candidate for Regina University, Corie Rempel, is familiar with running for a constituency in Regina. In the 2020 provincial election, Rempel ran in the Regina Northeast riding for the PCs and got .078 per cent of the votes in the election.
Rempel is a small business owner and a father of four children. He looks to claim a toughly contested Regina University for the PCs.
The final candidate for the Regina University riding is Cedar Park of the Sask Green Party. In the 2020 election for Regina University, the Sask Green Party collected 0.23 per cent of the votes.
These four parties will contest for Regina University during the provincial election on Oct. 28.
