REGINA - The large new riding of Regina Mount Royal will see the NDP, Saskatchewan Party and Saskatchewan Green Party contest for the legislative seat.
Regina Mount Royal was created in a 2022 redistribution, taking parts of Regina Pasqua, Regina Rosemont and Lumsden-Morse.
Regina Rosemont is no longer a riding, as Regina Mount Royal has effectively taken its spot.
The former MLA of Regina Rosemont, Trent Wotherspoon of the NDP, is seeking another term in the legislature, this time in Regina Mount Royal.
Wotherspoon was the MLA for the seat of Regina Rosemont since being elected in 2007. He also served as the NDP’s interim leader between 2016-2017.
Wotherspoon was raised in Regina, earning an Education degree from the University of Regina. Wotherspoon has previous teaching experience, and his wife also teaches.
In the 2020 election for Regina Rosemont, the NDP received 57 per cent of the vote, while the Saskatchewan Party had 35 per cent of the votes in the election.
It will be a tough uphill battle for the Sask Party, who never won the old Regina Rosemont riding.
The Sask Party will send candidate Jaspreet Mander for the Regina Mount Royal riding.
Mander immigrated to Canada in 2005 and moved to Regina in 2011. Mander, a former truck driver, established in own trucking business.
Mander supports local charitable organizations, including student mentorship programs and local food banks. He and his family live in White City, located east of Regina.
Meanwhile, the Saskatchewan Green Party and candidate Regina Deymen are looking to play spoilers for the Regina Mount Royal riding.
Deymen grew up in southern Saskatchewan, graduating from SIAST (now known as Saskatchewan Polytechnic). She has run her own daycare for 15 years now.
Deymen also volunteers for the Kidney Foundation and Muscular Dystrophy Canada.
In the 2020 election for Regina Rosemont, the Sask Green Party received 0.43 per cent of the votes.
These three parties will contest for the Regina Mount Royal riding on Oct. 28.
