Long-service awards handed out at the Unity Hospital Christmas party included recognizing Fran A. Ganzer’s 20 years of service on the hospital board and Dr. W. J. Doyle’s 20 years of medical service.
Tony Sander, Wilkie Chamber of Commerce president, presented local shopper David Zeigler with the chamber’s Christmas promotion prize of an all-expense paid trip to Las Vegas, Nev.
Local shoppers in Unity winning Unity Chamber of Commerce prizes were Carmen Walker of Senlac, a 26-inch colour television, and Minnie Giggs, a trip to Edmonton to see some professional hockey.
Snowmobiles were banned from the Wilkie Golf Course after approximately 30 trees were completely destroyed and others damaged by the machines in an act of “irresponsible and deliberate vandalism.”

Ted Smith’s Service in Unity was destroyed in a major fire, just before Christmas. The fire began at 8:30 a.m. and the blaze flattened the thriving business in less than two hours. Owner Tim Lang wasn’t sure what he would do going forward, saying he had to “get things straightened out with insurance.”
The last deadline for financing the Prairie Springs Mineral Spa expired without a major investor coming forward. Chair Wally Lorenz planned a shareholders’ meeting to see what other options might be available.
Handel CWL celebrated 60 years in 2004. A 60-year pin was presented to Eva Perlinger, the only founding member left. Yvette Gruber received a 25-year pin.
Layne, son of Ken and Anita Parker, was delivered by Dr. Linda Bloem at the Unity Health Centre Jan. 5. The Unity 2005 New Year’s baby arrived much earlier in the year than the 2004 baby, Alexis Elder, who was born mid-May.
