50 years ago

With the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool celebrating its 50th anniversary, three founding members – Henry Nestman Sr., of Wilkie and Wm. Gillespie and R.L. Clay of Landis – were recognized at the district banquet in Leipzig.

Local principals chose Grade 12 students: Delmarie Vivian Foley, Kerrobert; David John Fowler, Salvador; Brian James Hyland, Scott; Lois Ann Mason, Macklin; Elvin George Milne, Cut Knife; Judith Ann Quick, Unity; and David George Ramsay, Baldwinton, to attend a two-day trip to the University of Saskatchewan.

St. John’s Anglican Church in Unity held a special 65th anniversary service, presided over by the Right Reverend D.A. Ford, Bishop of Saskatoon.

The Unity Elks Lodge initiated four new members: Joe Baptist, Butch Boskill, Larry Russell and Don Burns.

Tragedy in Luseland – local businessman Wayne Klein succumbed to injuries suffered in a fire at his business, Klein’s Auto Service, at the age of 49.

Although the Atlanta investment group seemed to be losing interest in the Prairie Springs Mineral Spa project at Wilkie, two other investment groups, including a Saskatchewan First Nations band, were taking at look at participating.

Local hockey official Troy Winterhalt was excited to be chosen as one of the linesmen for the Royal Bank Cup national junior A hockey championships taking place in Grand Prairie, Alta.

St. Peter’s School safety patrollers Tyler Forbes, Brian Kuhn, Ashlie Klein and Amy Keller were off to be part of a 200-patroller group in Regina for the CAA Saskatchewan School Safety Patrol Jamboree.
