Man facing charges following robbery involving a bat in Saskatoon

SASKATOON - A man is facing several charges following a report of a robbery in Saskatoon.

Shortly before 6 a.m. on Aug. 22, an off-duty Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) officer was on their way to work when they arrived upon an injured man in the area of 31st Street West and Idylwyld Drive North. He appeared to be suffering from what were believed to be several serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The member identified themselves as a police officer and called for additional police and paramedics to respond.

After investigating, police determined the man had been assaulted and robbed at an address in the 1000 block of Idylwyld Drive North.

Officers then went to that address where they arrested three people and took them to SPS Detention for further investigation.

The injured man was transported to hospital by paramedics for treatment of his injuries.

While in detention, one of the people arrested, a 32-year-old man, began acting erratically, damaging SPS property and threatening self-harm. He was removed from his cell and transported to hospital for assessment. The man was later charged with mischief over $5,000 and released.

Armed robbery at gas station

Later that day, in a separate incident, at around 1:30 p.m., police received multiple reports of a man armed with a blunt object in the 1100 block of Idylwyld Drive North.

Shortly after, police received a report of an armed robbery at a gas station nearby.

Upon arrival, officers learned that a man matching the description of the suspect being investigated for the earlier assault had entered the store, damaged a display case, and threatened a staff member with a bat before fleeing the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.

The gas station employee was not physically injured during the robbery. Officers then attended to an address in the 1000 block of Idylwyld Drive North and arrested the suspect. He was also found to be in possession of methamphetamine.

As a result, the 32-year-old Saskatoon man has been charged with robbery, possession of a controlled substance, and failure to comply with court-imposed conditions.

The General Investigations Section is continuing to investigate the earlier assault and subsequent events.
