What are MCPs and why should you care about them?

MCP is an open-source standard that enables AI models to turn data into action.

Greetings from Syracuse University. I'm on campus today to lecture about AI at the Lockheed Martin Executive Education Immersion. It's going to be an awesome day.

In the news: Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open-source standard that enables AI models to turn data (including yours) into action. It makes building and deploying AI agents much easier. But what are MCPs and why should you care about them?

Last week, OpenAI surprised many by adopting MCP across its entire product line. They join a growing list of hyperscalers and foundational model developers — including Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Cloudflare, Replit, Story Protocol, Apollo, Stripe, Perplexity, Figma, Sourcegraph, Codeium, and others — who are aligning around this emerging standard.

MCP is quickly becoming a standard. My Sunday essay, The MCP Revolution: Why This Boring Protocol May Change Everything About AI offers a simple, high-level overview.
