REGINA — A 20-year-old man is facing charges following an incident that included the assault of an officer early Saturday morning in Regina.
Regina Police Service says that at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Jan. 13, officers were patrolling in the area of 12th Avenue and Lorne Street when they observed a vehicle driving the wrong way down a one-way street. The driver also went through a red light. Officers attempted a traffic stop but the vehicle kept driving and refused to stop for police.
A short time later, the vehicle was spotted by another patrol unit in the area of 4th Avenue and Pasqua Street.
According to RPS, officers waited for the vehicle to come to a stop in an alley near the 1400 Block of King Street. The suspect driver exited the vehicle and fled the scene. Three other occupants remained in the vehicle.
The members of the canine unit tracked the suspect driver to the backyard of a residence where they found him hiding in between a fence and a shed. The suspect refused to come out and officers deployed the police service dog to assist. During the arrest, the officer was kicked in the head.
The suspect was taken into custody and transported to hospital to be treated for dog bite injuries before being taken to RPS detention cells. He has been charged with: assault with intent to resist arrest; flight from peace officer; fail to comply with probation order; and fail to comply with condition of undertaking.
