Macklin hockey phenom selected for U18 Team Canada roster

Macklin's Cole Reschny, who played for Saskatoon AAA Blazers in 2023, will soon be playing as part of Team Canada in U18 National championship.

MACKLIN - The community of Macklin and west central Saskatchewan continues to celebrate the ongoing success story of Cole Reschny. The Macklin born player has been named as one of 22 players to wear the maple leaf representing Team Canada at the upcoming Hlinka Gretzy Cup in Edmonton.

Reshny’s talent was showcased in his early days in Macklin and lead through several hockey roads which included Saskatoon Blazers U18AAA and the Victoria Royals of the WHL.

Macklin’s hockey hero played at the World U17 Championship for Canada Red, earning eight points in seven games. Hockey Canada will surely be keeping an eye on this Saskatchewan product.

The Hlinka Gretzky Cup will take place between August 5-10 in Edmonton. According to the Hockey Canada release, Team Canada has won 24 gold medals in 32 years of summer under-18 competition, along with three silver medals and one bronze.

The annual U18 hockey tournament, administered by Hockey Canada, the Czech Ice Hockey Association and the Slovak Ice Hockey Federation has been held under various titles, in various counties since 1991.

The tournament is touted to be a prominent pre-season showcase for NHL prospects. The 2007 born, 180 pound forward is looking to continue another chapter in his hockey success story.

In a Feb. 2023 story on SASKTODAY.ca as Reschny had completed his Canada Games experience and was heading to the Canadian U18AAA championship (formerly known as Telus Cup), Curtis Gette, spokesperson for Macklin Minor Hockey said of Reschny, “Cole’s achievements haven’t gone unnoticed in and around the local hockey organization. His success in the hockey world has been discussed in and around the arena all year long, and everywhere in between.”

Macklin residents affirm this is still true today as excitement has spread about the recent Hockey Canada announcement.

“Cole’s accolades have not only given our young members something to talk about but something to strive for, for the rest of the time they choose to pursue hockey in their life,” added Gette in that earlier interview.
