MEOTA — Hi folks. I’m back home for a couple of days, so will undertake to carry on. The hospital scene doesn’t provide much inspiration but will give full credit to the rehab unit at City Hospital in Saskatoon.
This weather has proven to be a disappointment, as trips to the West Coast were impacted. Gwen Lacerte and Arlene Walker picked the wrong dates for their trip to Victoria and will have to spend time indoors like the rest of us.
Welcome home to Albert and Carol Huys on their return from the Cayman Islands. A bit of temperature adjustment from the mid-20s to -30s. My daughter and husband returned from their two-week cruise from Puerto Rico. At home in Saskatoon, they picked up colds when re-climatizing. We also welcome back Fred and Connie Grant from their stay in Florida and their cruise out of Tampa. Strong winds in Florida threatened to delay their return, but thanks to a savvy niece, they were able to catch another flight. Conrad and Noreen Bernier are back with us after a successful trip to southern Arizona.
After hosting a great premier car show last fall, we will be treated to a second show Saturday, July 27. The setting for the show is planned for the Meota baseball diamonds and is hoped to be bigger and better with a variety of food trucks being invited. Thanks to Rick and Jenna Kissack for carrying this project forward. Pre-registration is encouraged and you may contact Rick at 780-214-0173. Being a community project, proceeds are to be used for Meota children's programs.
Our ice hut count was a bit down from a high of over 40 last year to slightly over 30 this year. Some good catches have been reported and with our current temperature, we can be assured of plentiful ice.
The marina project is back in progress. The excavators are busy removing the frozen ground in preparation for installing the pre-fabricated cement marina walls.
Activities for the week have slowed down but bridge winners were: first - Margaret Dyck and David Creegan; second - Albert Blais and Linda Ard. In canasta: first - Nester Fransoo and Gwen Lacerte; second - Linda Ard and Gordon Klein; third - Marion Ottas and Bev McCrimmon. In Norwegian Whist: first - Lillian Serenko, second Linda Ard, third Judy Walker.
Meota Grand Slam of Curling

Grand Slam of Curling returned to the village after a two-week holiday break. The highlight of Tuesday night was seeing Randy Iverson six points in the second end against Kirsten Bru. Unfortunately, six points were not enough to contain the powerful Bru team, as Bru followed up with 12 points throughout the following six ends to win 12-8 in a high-scoring affair.
Always in the last place you look, as Cory Iverson made his season debut for the Colin Sharp rink as he finally found his curling shoes. The added spark to the Sharp rink was enough to get by his older brother Randy, as they scored five points in the sixth to win 9-3.
Will he play or not was the question circulating around the village and ice shacks all day as Bob Bartkewich was listed as a game-time decision due to a nagging knee injury leading up to the Alm-Cadrin matchup. After hearing reports that a hot tub and an Aleve proved to be unsuccessful, Lonnie Alm worked the phones to bring in last-minute substitution Daryl Bachman. Fortunately, Gil Cadrin had drawn up two game plans for the matchup and was well prepared as he orchestrated a 6-2 win over Alm.
After hearing the news of the post office moving to a new location, Pat Mohr looked unsettled and couldn't fully recover as he was defeated handily by Pat Becotte 7-2.
Colin Mack and his team of Maddox Laclare, Kenyon Laclare and Carter Mack defeated Don Johnson 11-7 in a back-and-forth battle. Wanda Weber, playing exceptional as of late, defeated Lee Gaunsage 6-1 Thursday night making that two wins in a row.
A game that saw a measurement, a blank end and Scott Sheppard, it was no surprise it would come down to the final shot in the Welford versus Schmidt game. It was Welford who managed to hang on and steal one to win 6-4.
Randy Orchison, Cherelle Cadrain and Mike Svojonaski played short-handed as they were missing their fearless lead and leader, Raecine Waters. It was another game that came down to the final shots, as they pulled off a character victory against Al Collie 7-5. The Langemeade icon Zane Lacousiere also came away with a win this week, downing Kyle Doom 7-3.
Topping off a busy return to the rink was a Friday night Sturling Spiel. Gil and Susan Cadrin were the overall winners going a perfect 3-0 after defeating Don and Martina Johnson, Kevin Russell and Jamie Bugg, and the Al Collie- Joanne Rubiche Blaquiere pairing. Second place went to the Randy Sharp and Mark Mcninch twosome.
