Meota and District News: Shuffleboard warms a winter afternoon

Grand Slam of Curling is back with 18 teams.

MEOTA — Another week and still enjoying firm footing. A good way to enjoy the winter. The wonders of nature as we were able to view a beautiful sunset over iced-over Jackfish Lake. What may not be visible in the photo is the ice ridges that occurred from the strong winds over the partially open water. Take care, snowmobilers.

There will be a talk given by a dietary nutritionist at the Do Drop In on Dec. 8 at 10.30 a.m. Dallas Odgers will address nutrition as it’s related to diabetes.

The Do Drop recently held a shuffleboard tournament. There was a delicious potluck lunch and board games played to fill in a fun-filled day. The winners of the tournament were: first - Wally Mack and Karen Kelly; second - Eric Callbeck and Dave Sayers; third -  Linda Ard and Gordon Klein. Nestor Fransoo organized the tournament and kept things running on an even keel.

Etta Miesner had top hands at Tuesday afternoon bridge. Second was Bea Prutti. Thursday, first went to Margaret Dyck and Dave Creegan and second were Fraser Glen and Jean Lawes. First in B were Mary Phelps and Gerry Craig.

Carrol Huys and Marion Ottas topped Friday's canasta. Second were Vivianne Lesko and Cora Christiansen and third were Bob Lesko and Dave Sayers.

The annual bridge Christmas party is scheduled for Dec. 2nd starting at 9.30 a.m. A dinner feast and plentiful snacks will be available.

A jamboree will be held at the Pioneer Hall in North Battleford Dec. 3 at 1:30 p.m. for all musicians and vocalists able to come out and entertain the crowd.

Meota Curling Returns

(Submitted by Derek Welford)

It was 254 days since the second Silver Broom was hung on the Meota Curling Rink wall, to document the dominance of last year's Grand Slam masterpiece. A new page was turned Thursday night, as 18 teams vie for the opportunity to write the greatest story they will ever tell and become the next Silver Broom Champion as the 2023-2024 Meota Grand Slam of Curling officially commenced. A full draw signalled the end to a busy off-season which was highlighted by acquisitions, trades, retirements and expansion rinks. Local dignitary, RM councillor Randy St Marie ceremoniously cast the first stone.

The featured game of the week was perennial favourite Kirsten Bru up against the Evan Schmidt rink. Trying to build off a near-perfect regular season performance last year, the Bru rink brought in Minnehaha local Lindon Goodall in free agency to offset Dave Code's transition to the delivery stick. The Bru and Schmidt teams exchanged numerous multi-point scores in a thrilling game where fans could be seen gravitating from other games to observe the featured sheet. Schmidt had the opportunity to force an extra end with the final stone in the eighth but was just shy as the Bru rink stole one and held on to win the season opener 9-7.

The Derek Welford rink squared off against the Pat Becotte team, with Ed Cadrin taking over skip duties for the match. Losing a key piece to their Silver Broom winning team, second Trent Lafreniere to retirement, Welford managed to secure top free agent and 2023 Substitute Curler of the Year Tina Schaefer. Though curling short with three curlers and missing Darrell Weber on the broom, Cadrin dialled in that draw weight and never trailed as they defeated the Welford rink, 9-5 in eight ends.

Longtime members of the club, the Wanda Weber and Pat Mohr rinks squared off as the only other game of the night. Short-staffed a couple curlers, Mohr brought in Randy Sharp and Carter Johnson to curl alongside him and reigning Rookie of the Year, Dale Johnson. Appears to be no sophomore slump for Johnson, as Mohr cruised to an 8-4 season-opening win.

Week 2 of curling has all 18 teams in action, with 12 making their season debuts.
