NORTHEAST – MLA Chris Beaudry of the Wadena-Kelvington riding spoke at the Legislative on April 7 on what Green Shirt day means to him and the he Logan Boulet effect.
Beaudry was emotional. “Today, I rise to speak about Green Shirt Day — a day that holds profound meaning for myself and many of us, particularly those of us in Saskatchewan. This day, which falls on April 7th, is not just about wearing green shirts; it represents hope, community, and the incredible power of generosity through organ donation.”
On April 7, 2018, Humboldt Broncos defenceman Logan Boulet succumbed to his injuries. His parents, Bernadine and Toby Boulet offered to donate his organs so that six lives could live on.
Beaudry said, “As a former coach of the 2017/18 Humboldt Broncos, I remember the heartbreak our community faced after the tragic events of April 6, 2018. The loss of our young athletes was devastating, but from that tragedy emerged incredible acts of kindness and selflessness. In particular, we witnessed the heroism of the families, who, in their darkest hours, chose to honour their loved ones by donating their organs. Their courage has inspired countless others to consider becoming donors themselves.”
Green Shirt Day serves as a reminder that we can turn our grief into action, that one life lost can lead to the saving of many others. It encourages us to engage in conversations about organ donation, to educate ourselves, and to register to be donors Beaudry said.
Saskatchewan now leads Canada in organ donation.
“So, let us continue this trend not just as a symbol of remembrance, but as a commitment to support organ donation and as a call to action for everyone to consider how we can contribute to this vital cause,” Beaudry finished.
