Culturama to celebrate diverse cultures at Melfort on Oct. 5

Melfort Culturama will be held Oct. 5 at the Kerry Vickar Centre.

MELFORT — The Melfort Culture Days committee is hosting Culturama this weekend on Oct. 5 at the Kerry Vickar Centre.

Brenda Mellon, Melfort Museum curator and cultural co-ordinator, said that while the format has evolved, Culturama has been a staple in Melfort for several years. Last year’s event drew over 500 attendees.

The event will run all day, featuring a variety of cultural groups offering family-friendly activities at the Kerry Vickar Centre. Participating groups include: the Philippines, Métis Nation, Nigeria, Canada, Melfort Public Library, Northern Lights Quilters Guild, Northern Lights Woodcarvers, Melfort Arts Council, Ukraine, Scotland, India, Pakistan, Northeast Newcomer Services, Wheatland Calligraphy Guild, Aspiring Artists, and Melfort Youth Evolution.

Attendees will receive a passport at registration, with opportunities to win door prizes. The event is sponsored by SaskCulture, Sask Lotteries, the City of Melfort, and North Lights Casino. Festivities will kick off at 11 a.m. with entertainment, cultural displays, and food samples at select booths. Demonstrations from the quilters guild, woodcarvers, aspiring artists, and Ukrainian Easter egg-making will continue throughout the day. The Melfort Arts Council will also host a Magic Migits doll workshop.

“There will be something for everyone in the family to enjoy – great entertainment, cultural displays, demonstrations, interactive workshops, and delicious food. Everyone is welcome,” Mellon said.
