HUMBOLDT – A new Hutterite School plans to open its doors on Feb. 10 in 2025.
Kevin Garinger, Director of Education, Horizon School Division, said they estimate that around 15 to 20 children will attend the new Vier Lake Colony School for the Cudworth and Wakaw area.
The Hnidy Farms Hutterite Colony’s new school, the Vier Lake Colony School, will be established on Feb. 10, making it Horizon’s fourth Hutterian school. In collaboration with colony leaders, Horizon ensures that these schools provide the Saskatchewan curriculum while respecting and incorporating cultural values and traditions.
Garinger explained that when a Hutterite colony is interested in starting a school, they are responsible for the building and the ongoing costs to maintain that school building. Usually the colony works with the division to decide on a name for the school at the colony. In this case, the school has been named “Vier Lake Colony School” for purposes of Hnidy Colony.
Garinger went on to indicate that the school division is responsible for all staffing responsibilities related to the principal/teacher who will be working in the Hutterite school as well as any support staff needed. The division would also be responsible for purchasing and putting in place any movable equipment in the school such as teacher and student desks, bookshelves, and photocopiers. The division also ensures connectivity with the Government of Saskatchewan Community Net, if required. Hutterite schools have German school prior to “English school” and it is usually between one and two hours in length. Garinger said a meeting with Hnidy Colony leadership is scheduled in the near future to review any facility needs for Vier Lake Colony school.
