PORCUPINE PLAIN – The community of Porcupine Plain is preparing to host their third annual Unity in the Community event on Feb. 8

The event gathered approximately 250 people last year and has a wealth of cultural food displays.

This year there will be Norwegian, German, Filipino, Ukrainian, Metis and First Nations displays.

The Dean Smith Band will be there to play traditional Metis fiddle music. The event starts at 1 p.m. Creeland Dancers will host a jigging workshop at 2 p.m. and their performance will be the last of the day, beginning around 4 p.m.

The Yellow Quill drummers will join the event throughout the day, participating in the opening ceremonies and performing a drumming performance. The Filipino community of Porcupine Plain created a program of song, dance and drama to perform each year at this event. This group has also travelled to Hudson Bay to share with the community.

The event is free to attend at the Porcupine Plain community hall with proceeds being raised to the Porcupine Plain Fire Department.
