HUMBOLDT – The Saskatchewan Trappers Association held its annual convention on March 14-15.

Don Gordon, current president of the Saskatchewan Trappers Association, said the organization is the voice for all trappers in the province.

“Our mission is the conservation and management of Saskatchewan’s wild furbearers and their habitat while preserving, promoting and maintaining our trapping heritage.”

Approximately 200 individuals attended the convention.

“We present the proper fur-handling methods and any new trapping techniques that have been certified by the province,” said Gordon.

The organization was established in 1969 and has gained members in recent years.

Children’s activities were planned during the convention.

Gordon said, “We have a mentorship program introduced this year so that the newly graduated students from the trapper education course have an opportunity to work with a senior trapper to get hands-on experience in skinning and boarding a muskrat. There are fur competitions for the other students to show off their workmanship. There is a kid’s corner where the kids will do crafts and make a fox pom-pom for their toques.”

The Saskatchewan Trappers Association is governed by a board of directors from across the province. Eric Nordick is the representative for the Humboldt region.
