HUMBOLDT — The school community councils of St. Augustine and St. Dominic Schools are joining forces to fundraise – while having a little friendly competition.
“They really haven't had the opportunity to do that this year, so they wanted to do a little bit of that for the two schools,” said Cal Theisen, St. Augustine’s principal. “This is what they came up with, a 50/50 raffle.”
The raffle is being held online at stdominicstaugustine5050.com, through a service called Rafflebox.
“It works really slick,” Theisen said. “It's all done online, so students are not approaching anybody in-person, people just go on and buy tickets.”
On the website, ticket purchasers can select which school to support as part of a friendly rivalry that aims to encourage the schools to raise a bit more money.
There is a $5,000 guaranteed prize, supported by Discovery Ford and Hoppe Transport.
As of June 11, $6,400 had been raised.
“In my mind, a reasonable goal would be to hit $10,000 because $5,000 is going to whoever wins, and then the schools get the remainder,” Theisen said.
Theisen said during the pandemic, the school community councils haven’t done a lot of fundraising.
“When you start looking at students approaching people or some of the other ways we do fundraising, [it] has just been a little bit more difficult this year, so we really haven't done what we traditionally do.”
The raffle started June 1. It will go until Tuesday, June 29, with the draw being made the next day.
