The Chapel Gallery presents the beautiful works of Edie Marshall in her solo exhibition, Picturing Grandmother, on display until Feb. 3.

The exhibition features large landscape paintings where Edie Marshall the relationships between figure and ground; past and present. Found within the landscapes are the silhouettes of her ancestors whose images blur in and out through the foliage, shifting from the background to the foreground, and back again. Large sweeping brush strokes of brilliant blue, green, and gold are combined to give form and line, achieving an ethereal sense to her work.

Marshall researched the lives of early pioneer women and looked for clues to what life was really like for prairie women, as they experienced a new land, a new language and a new life. She wondered about her own grandmother and how she felt when she arrived to this new place, this environment, which is now so familiar to Marshall. This exploration resulted in Marshall combining images of her maternal grandmother's family from the time of prairie settlement with images of today's prairie landscape.

Marshall says," By placing the figures of people I once knew, or knew of, into landscapes that I inhabit, I've brought the memory of them closer to my own experience, altering their story to fit mine."
