3,000 Sask. drivers stopped

Police officers in Saskatchewan stopped and spoke with 3,014 drivers during an enforcement blitz Oct. 11 and 14.

According to an RCMP press release, the focus of Operation Impact, a national strategy, was to decrease collisions through concerted policing efforts byincreasing patrols, education, and enforcement.

According to Sgt. Craig Cleary, F Division RCMP media relations officer, the following charges resulted from the blitz: 48 impaired driving charges; 25 driving suspensions relating to intoxication (approved screening device used but not high enough readings for criminal charges; 19 distracted driving charges; 1,283 speeding charges; three charges for following too close; 15 charges of careless driving; 34 seatbelt charges; 31 prohibited drivers charged; and 34 criminal charges (non-driving related and includes warrants for arrest).

"RCMP would like to remind the motoring public that safety on our provincial highways is everyone's responsibility," says Sgt. Cleary

"Please take steps to ensure that you are abiding by all the rules of the roadas well asnot drinking and driving."

Sgt. Cleary also points out that with the winter season rapidly approaching, the RCMP highly recommends the use of winter tires. Motorists are also advised to carry an emergency kit take the time to have your vehicle inspected to make sure it is ready for everything that winter throws at us.
